this was 20 years ago
yes the originals were aluminum
I replaced mine with the plastic
and yes seal them up with silka flex
you should be ok, they do take a beating being on the bow
thought they looked cool, but were just a pain in the ass
never used them, but they came with the boat

yannis I would clean mine once a year, when the boat was out of the water, before it went back in it would be sprayed with clear anti fouling coat every other year I would open the holes up with a drill use the boat enough you don't have to worry about build up and I am talking salt water, no in lin...

I have never removed any of my batts from any of my boats
shut all switches off
check water in the spring
and give them a charge before splashing

as far as zincs go there are different zincs
for fresh water and salt
I put 2 on each shaft
1 one each rudder
trim tabs if you have them
I also had a divers zinc on my transom
I think the fresh water zincs have more magmessium
