Re: Prop Tunnels/Pockets on a 31

I took many pointers from reading Bob's posts over the years. Two knots is a big deal and attainable without much work. Read through all his posts about weight distro, propping etc. I picked up right around two knots with his advice. 25 knots all day long at 14 to 15 total gallons an hour. It's a tw...

Re: Boat Lift reinforcement for Hurricane

Steve, I think there is a delicate balance with type of lift being elevator vs four post hanging from cables. I would expect mechanical support via metal or a lot of lines to be mandatory for a four post. Boat has to be high enough with either type of lift. Bolt all the metal you can to it to preven...

I put larger rudders on my 28 but did so when I first bought it in 2005. The stock rudders are rather small and close quarters battle with one engine might be challenging. With the oversized rudders I can pull my props off but I suspect not all clearances are the same boat to boat. My struts don't l...

My first concern would be are these engines made for a boat? Compression, cams, limited duty verse constant duty. To your question, you will need way more prop but depends on rpm/power curve. I think my diesels are rated around 360 torque. I use 1 1/8 shafts been running them since 2006. No issues. ...

Check your air filters. I think lots of black smoke means plenty of fuel, but could be short on air. The real mechanics can confirm hopefully.
Bottom growth will easily reduce your WOT RPM.
Maybe bottom growth is enough to overload while getting it over the hill up to cruise rpm?

Can't hurt to check the filters. Ethanol fuel as far as tank issues but your symptoms described sound like end of season shag on the bottom. Start with the simple stuff. Grab a mask and take a look under her skirt.

Bill,
If your speed is down at your cruise rpm and you can't reach wot rpm on both motors I suspect your own assessment of bottom growth is the culprit. Once the grass, worm coral or barnacles get bad enough you have to mechanically remove them. No amount of using the boat will remove it.
