I believe you can step up to 1 3/8 shafts with out to much trouble
you would have to change out the cutless bearing on the struts
don't hold me to this
as far as the rudders are concerned maybe bruce can chime in
don't know if they are still available

it was at the back stb side close to the transom
at times my pump was running 4 to 5 hrs straight when live linning
no issuses with the flow of water

I had a 3/4 thru hull for my wash down and live well
no scoop, but I did have a inline strainer before the pump
live well and wash down was controlled by a y valve
I used the shureflow super blaster 5.5 gpm

in all my years of running boats I have never had a problem with the south bay strainers or the groco as pete mentiond
getting clogged
not saying it cant happen

when changing mine
I use to clean the threads with a small wire brush
then put a small amount of anti sieze on the male thread
when installing new zinc pencils

Just remove the hose
And put a threaded cap on it
Use some anti seize on it so you can remove cap in the future

exchanger should sit on a L bracket with 2 bolts holding it
drain the saltwater, and the coolent
remove hoses, and change out
after new one is in place put hoses back on
remember to refill coolent and let the engine run with the cap off
for awhile
