They need to be a specific depth under water (they use the surrounding water to cool the bulbs) If you can keep them 12" deep all the way around you'd probably be OK with the 50's.

When you get the funk out, another nice way to keep em fresh on the inside is to place a bounce or other fabric softener sheet across the intake grill. It gives the whole boat a nice fresh smell.
