Sounds right to me. That 30 amp breaker is probably a little much for a 3.5 KW set. My calculation show 3.5 KW @ 120 volts is 29.16 amps. Might want to back off to a 25 amp breaker. A shop vac is a power eating sucker.....

AJ's wet
Just got a call from the yard and AJ is back in, and both Cummins fired right up after 11 months on the hard. Port gear was very low on oil and yard said both gears had the fill plugs removed. Must have been the Cummins guy that was fooling with her before Katrina. We figure the oil just went out th...

Chris - good to hear from you. Yep, Hennie & Ursula are from SA and used to run a lodge in Africa, think it was the Bom Bom or something like that. Could not take the Fatal Shot for fear Timmy would drink it in one swallow like he did on Miss Vicki's porch. Have room for you next year - how about it...

Yeah, it was a pretty sight with all those different hull colors. Timmy was actually on his best behavior down there, heard he did not puke even once in the 22 foot swells, did not grab-ass the help, only made one hotel desk girl cry on our return to PC. I gave her brother his home address. Think hi...

Sure, the Liberty 42 is nice, as are some of the larger Vikings. But in her size range there is nothing that has ever been built by mere motals with the proportions and lines of the B31. A couple of weeks ago while we were at Tropic Star, one afternoon a ray of sun broke through the clouds and hit t...

I'm usually pretty tolorant of the Heyena boat guys, but this has to stop. The B28 remains butt ugly. The B31 is the best looking boat ever built, bar none. It has lines, it has lines, it has lines. I do not want to offend anyone, but the B28 is an ugly boat. Looks like a hyena dragging its butt on ...

Don't worry about it, they are fine. I've done that a bunch of times with my ZFs and no problem. Down in Panama they use the velvet drives and back the hell out of them. They told me they had a problem burning them up and put gear oil coolers on all of them and problem solved. If it ain't broke, don...

Russ, good gears. Assuming you will run 1.5:1 ratio, start with 21x22 three blades with no cup. I get 24.5 kts at 2400 rpm out of my 6BTA 250s with that set up. Maybe more now with a new paint job, new props, new struts, new cutless bearings, and a bottom job. Shoot if AJ makes 10 knots after her ad...

Joe - the coupling between the gear and the shaft is usually thru a key and likewise on the prop. If the key on either end is sheared, it could maybe do what you describe, but a far fetched proposition. If you don't feel any shake when this rpm increase happens, I'd eliminate the gear and look to th...

Todd, let me be your guide. The B28 is a nice boat, but butt ugly, thus its name "the Hyena Boat". The Bertram 31 is the best boat ever built, to this day. A slap dab beautiful boat. Don't be scared of its size, it handles like a dream. With the wide apart props, you can manuver it with two fingers ...

Thanks guys, she really looks good. The kid that was rolling the bottom paint heard me tell the yard mgr. that she looks pretty good for a 34 year old boat. Paid a visit this morning to AJ down at the Seabrook yard in N.O. Her new Imron 5000 paint job is spectacular. Half tower is repaired, shafts, struts & rudders back in, props installed. They were rolling the bottom paint while I was there. New FB windshield, new 6.0 KW genset, outrigger holders fixe...

The Seabrook Marine yard in New Orleans was closed last week for vacation, but I tracked one of the owners down in TX. They promise AJ will be ready to come home this week. I've followed your posts over on boatdiesel. I have the same engines in the same B31. Loss of power as you describe without belching a lot of smoke is an indicator of a fuel delivery problem vs. an air delivery problem. My experience has been that if the fuel restriction is on the suction side of th...

I've reserved 24 slots and 8 boats at TSL for June 23-30, 2007. Fly to PTY Friday June 22 and fly back to the US on Sunday, July 1. Got the confirmation today and the price has increased about 10% for 2007. Don't have it in front of me, but instead of the 3695 this year, its now 4095 and the 350 loc...

Randle - that's a mighty big load you described. Turbos probably need a wash, but let's think in aviation terms here. Density altitude. Hot, humid air is a lot thinner than cool, dry air. In the summertime around here the heat and humidity can raise the apparent altitude by a couple of thousand feet...

Overload of the engines, caused by dirty botom, fouled props, or dirty air filters. I fished on the Geaux Deep a lot with Garry, and she'd spout some normal black smoke coming up on plane, but nothing after that. Brown exhaust is a sign of too much fuel going in for the rpm's, and the rpm's are bein...

Panama towel taming trick
Saw this trick on all the boats at TSL. Each boat had a paper towel holder on the forward bulkhead in the cabin, and to keep it from unwinding in the breeze, they had run about 8" of mono with an egg sinker on the end over the roll of towels. Mono is tied behind the towel holder. Bingo, works perfec...

A new topic just to see how this works. Will take a little getting used to, but The Faithful are pretty savvy folks. Story I heard that night on the whisky deck at TSL was that the mate reached out with the gaff for the Prof's tippet and the sail jumped on the gaff. Me's thinks that is a good story and he's sticking to it. Mike - you can buy a sterling silver napkin ring for about 25 bucks most places and it makes...
