Re: 46mph Bertram 31 !

It is all fun and games until your family is sick from the diesel fumes and you wrap a lobster trap warp in your prop 90 miles offshore at night. And then you smash your head on the bottom as you try to cut it free only to hit a floating container destroying a $7k transmission, $2k shaft, $1k prop a...

Re: 46mph Bertram 31 !

I always trim OB above the bottom of the boat when going slow in the flats. Nothing protruding below the hull and the keel is the only thing that could touch the bottom. That is a huge feature. Another great part is that she is on plane and loading at 23mph at 3500 rpm. No stress on the OBs. Evinrud...

Well said Carl.

I think the key is for each person to look at how they use their boat and make a determination for themselves. There is not magic engine combination that is ideal for everyone.

Re: 46mph Bertram 31 !

I think one of the biggest take aways is that OB power on Bertram’s is now a proven power method.

In the past 5 years at least half a dozen 31 Bertram’s have successfully converted to OB.

Re: 46mph Bertram 31 !

I would like to see that fuel consumption compared to a gas inboards. That is a more realistic comparison.

A pair of used twin 250hp outboard could be had pretty cheap.

The performance number give me confidence that I would make a simple, Transom mounted OB Bertram Bahia Mar 31 down the road.

Re: 46mph Bertram 31 !

The trend that I am seeing is that most people use their boat for things other than fishing. With two small children, my boat is the tubing, cocktailing, sandbar, island hopping, clamming, sunset cruise boat. If this holds true for others as well then I will argue that outboards even on a bracket is...

Looks like a beautiful boat. I really like the stair to the bridge and the layout without the engine boxes. I know OB's are not popular here but you had to admit it does have advantages. https://www.thehulltruth.com/boats-sale-wanted/996903-31-bertram-total-restoration-march-2019-a.html?996903=#post...

Went to the bank and got $40 worth of gold dollar presidential coins. Then went to Michael's arts and craft and got a small wooden box. Buried it on West Fox Island a few days before I made up a treasure map and hid it in the house for the kids (4 and 6) to find it. Took the whaler over to the islan...

Some of them are just for showboating but the market and demand has shifted. Wealthy people have less time than ever before. Spending 48 hours fishing offshore is a generally a thing of the past. A boat is now pulling multiple duty including spending time at the sandbar, water sports, cocktailing, f...

Easy ghetto option. Put the screw back in and after sanding to bare aluminum, put JB weld over it. You can also use epoxy as well. Change the gearlube every two years and grind the JB/Epoxy down to remove it. It sucks but will work with the least about of headache. Both of those are used on nosecone...

60mph out of a 31 Bertram is pretty amazing. Outboards today are quiet, smooth, no smoke and give amazing performance in a compact package. Mercury offers an 8 year warranty and now Evinrude is offering a 10 year warranty. That should help to quell some thoughts on long term durability. I would love...
