I'm very jealous. Did you get your motors from Seaboard Marine as well? Those controls look top-notch.

Where does the rear bilge pump discharge? Also I love that deck. I think that how I'm going to do mine. The removal deck is nice, but that it very clean looking.

I think the fuel burn numbers from JimmyG's boat may be for only one engine. The fuel burn curve is at the link below.

For those with their batteries in the bilge between the engines, do you have any concern about the batteries being submerged/shorted in the event of bilge flooding?

Re: Adding a bus heater
Anybody have any other ideas for getting heat to the flybridge? I was thinking something along the lines of what Mike said with the 4" PVC going up to the bridge.

Re: Adding a bus heater
I did this years ago. I put the heat exchanger / fan unit in the head, under the sink. I ran flexible duct behind the fridge. One vent goes to the V-berth. One opens in the cabin, just forward of the head. The third connects to 4" pvc pipe that runs up to the bridge and then out just below the helm...

Adding a bus heater
All, I am working on rewiring the boat now, and have also decided to add a hydronic bus heater to the boat. My boat is simple with minimal electronics, no gen, gas 454s, and no AC. I would like to add heat to make fall and spring trips a little more comfortable. I selected a 40,000 btu hydronic unit...

Removing windshield frames
All, Following up on the other windshield frame thread, I wanted to ask for some guidance on removing the aluminum window frames from the boat in order to replace the glass and paint them. All of the windows appear to have been replaced over the years with plexiglass that has since crazed and cracke...

Stephan,
I agree about keeping the boat light, but my boat already has a custom top with an enclosure that undoubtedly hurts speed but makes the fall and spring season much better.

Re: Potential 454 Replacement?
While I agree the big block torque is unquestionable, look at the power curve for the DI 6.2. This motor is not the 6.0 LS of old, this is a new technology, LS block. The power curve shows it at 450 lb-ft of torque at 3000 RPM. I don't think the old 454s made any more than that. Crusader 454 = 350 H...

Re: Potential 454 Replacement?
Chuck,
Do you have more information on your setup? trans ratio, prop pitch x diameter, measured fuel burn?
My goal is a reliable, 24-knot cruise, at 1mpg.
My goal this winter is to get the old 454s back into shape with fuel monitors, and see how attainable that may be.

Potential 454 Replacement?
Hey everybody, I started a thread a little while back discussing 454s in these boats. Let me preface this by saying I would love to put diesels in the boat one day, this discussion should be about gas motors for now. This discussion isn't about saving money by repowering because in reality very few ...

Re: Questions for Gas-powered 31 owners
I am going to run the boat again this afternoon and check again. Maybe there is an inaccuracy in the photo tach, or the boat is steeply overpropped, it’s hard to nail down one variable sometimes. Thanks for all the input.

Re: Questions for Gas-powered 31 owners
I ran the boat again all weekend and she ran great. The tachs are a little wonky and will need to be replaced before I can get accurate speed numbers. At what I approximate to be 3000 rpm I am getting 18 knots and at 3200 I am getting 20 knots. I have no idea if this is accurate or not. I will repla...

Re: Questions for Gas-powered 31 owners
Carl, Yes, agree on the smell. In my experience the smell of diesel exhaust I am more sensitive to, however, that would never stop me from buying a diesel boat. In this case, it’s simply the cost delta. The gas motors will be more than sufficient for the boating I do. You’re right, I can’t justify t...

Bob, I’m not sure what you mean with your comment about diesel smell. The only diesel smell I know is the smell of diesel exhaust and most of the diesel boats I’ve been on had some diesel exhaust smell to them. (I worked at Viking for a couple years and even those had a diesel smell sometimes.) That...
