Once I got the tank loose and was sure there wre no more fumes to explode, I used a sawzall to cut it up. I used copius amounts of hot water and dqwn to flush out the tank before doing anything.

I wondered about those round things too, but then it dawned on me that they were probably little round backing plates for the external strainer and the screws that came through were used for bonding the strainers.

Yes the confidence level is down. If it was just a little clicking noise, I would just shrug it off as a trait of this transmission, but people on the seawall can hear the noise as I motor by. I'm hoping that it may just be the damper.
