Here is a link to a very informative site on RFG.
One acronym I didn't know was RBOB which is "Reformulated Blend stock for Oxygenated Blending" which is the moose-milk gasoline that the oil companies now have to supply to the distributer so that it will come into correct octane spec when the ethanol is added at the terminal.
This particular link is to a page that talks about phase separation and the content of the ethanol in the Eth/H2O puddle at the bottom ofthe tank reaching 75%, which I found particualrly interesting. This article says the engine won't burn that mix, so if a lot of water gets into your fuel it won't result in engine damage, but I have seen another article that specifically points out that unlike water bottoms in conventional RFG, it IS possible to burn this ethanol mix and it WILL cause damage. One thing we all DO know is that it WILL cause corrosion.
The page also has a lot to offer if you click on the navigation links on the left side. This includes a short summary of the history of RFG and ethanol as well as information about alternatives to both ethanol or MTBE such as TAME and ETBE.
It seems that ethanol is the additive of choice right now only because of tax breaks. CNN is running a story today highlighting the 10% to 20% increase in the price of auto gas and blaming it on ethanol shortages.
Remove the tax break and ethanol will be just a bad memory!
