In Response To: Re: GFO Packing (Sean Burlingham)

The shaft packing came out looking burned which of course ruins the casing on the gfo stuff. My shafts were checked for run out and one had 9 thousandths in the shaft so I reshafted last year. I have had stuffing boxes completely opened up while in the water and its no big deal.
The water cooling line for the dripless seals is very small -no way it could sink your boat even if both let go at once. A small bilge pump could easily keep up. Different things work for each of us- I prefer the dripless seals now after dealing with the stuffing boxes for several years.
I plumbed the raw water cooling lines going to the dripless seals off of the backs of the intercoolers on my diesels. This past fall when we were winterizing the boat (on stands) with the "pink 50 below stuff" I momentarily freaked when the pink stuff started coming out of my shaft logs until I realized what was happening.
