Lets see here...
1) we have a net loss in energy by producing ethanol...that is it takes more oil to produce it than it replaces. The oil companies sell more oil as a result.
2) Mileage goes down as a result of using ethanol, so again, the oil companies sell more oil, AND the amount of pollutants in the air goes up.
3) because we burn more energy to produce the ethanol than we gain back out of it, our net pollutants must go up again.
3) we have a product that is subsidized to the oil companies by having almost 100% of their cost given back to them in tax benefits, BUT the oil companies sell this product to us at almost $3.00 per gallon. We pay for this stuff twice, once on tax day, and then again at the pump.
4) As long as the current administration keeps screwing around with the middle east the price of oil on world markets keeps getting higher.
5) the oil companies bitch about how difficult it is to deal with ethanol, because it won't go through their pipe lines, but they dig in their heels at the prospect of supplying non-oxygenated fuels through their retailers.
5) After Katrina the oil companies complained that their production capability was seriously diminished, yet they turned in all time record profits. Why would they want to repair their refineries?
6) the current administration is pretty friendly to big oil
What looks like incompetence manages to create more profit for big oil at every turn.
Think about it.
