Just cranking the engines over after a day or so of sitting I could hear a valve hang up, usually followed by the clank of a rod bending. What I found stopped this was to fog the engine with Carb/engine cleaner before shutting them down. I was now able to get the engine running without bending a rod or two, fix it then get it started. This did little if anything to get the boat running at cruising speed.
I could not run over 2800rpm without bending a rod. If I tried to push over 2800 it would not go much over 32-3400rpm anyway then a rod or two would go and it was a limp back to the dock. My fuel burn @2800rpm was 16-18gph, normal would be about 10-11gph. I did this most of the season with little headway till someone here mentioned Techron working. A couple doses in non-ethanol fuel and I was back up and running.
How do you know if it is the resin and not Tar and Varnish. For me, all I had to do is pull a plug. If it looked as if it was fouled with oil, yet was sticky that was a good indication. As mentioned you could pop off a carb and take a look underneath and inside the intake. If you have what looks like Shiny Hard Tar all over the place, you got a problem.
