It was not just the closed valves which were stuck, the deposits built up on the valve stems causing the problem. The valves closest to the carburator were the dirtiest and the ones toward the ends of the heads noticably cleaner. Carburator cleaner cleaned the gunk off immediately but unfortunately the damage had already been done with the push rods bent or broken.
We did find that Marvel Mystery Oil seemed to help on my freinds boat. We added it to the fuel as we were working our way through this problem and, unlike my problems, he did not sieze and valves or bend any push rods. We did punp his tank before trying Mystery Oil and found serious gunk in the fuel, same as my boat. His next tank full ran OK were as it took me 3 tank fulls to fully clean out the gum and varnish.
