I talked to my local Sunoco guy. Know him almost 20 years. He said they went to E10 on March 1. He is also concerned about his tanks, which he installed in 1990. He said many gas stations are concerned. When I asked him what Sunoco said in response, it was "We'll get back to you". He also said that E23 is coming, and that Sunoco had to give up their 94 Octane gas because the Ethanol content would not allow them to achieve that Octane and still comply with clean air requirements.
There was a good-size article in this past Sunday's New York Times....business section p.5....titled "On the Ethanol Bandwagon, Big Names and Big Risks". It discussed investing in Ethanol-producing companies. Some of the investors....Bill Gates ($84 mil); Richard Branson ($300-$400 mil). It did not address negative effects on current machinery and systems, other than to say that the auto industry will need to "build more flex-fuel cars"....to eventually handle E85, saying adding that capability would cost about $100 per car. Also discussed "cellulosic ethanol".....ethanol made from plant waste, wood chips, grasses, etc. Cheaper to produce than corn or sugar-derived ethanol....no cultivation, irrigation, fertilizers, etc. That's what got some of these guys excited. Corn ethanol only has 3% of the automotive fuel market right now, so it's vulnerable to something cheaper.
Seriously considering taking up golf....or investing in ethanol.
