Ron,
Here are answers to your questions based on my own personal experience.
1) Black goo coated the carburators causing the valves to stick, causing push rods to break and ultimately a requiring a rebuild of both heads on both engines.
2) See above
3) No claim, my insurance company said it was not a covered event.
4) Absolutely no signs of tank failure. Once the ethanol had cleaned the all of the gum and varnish off of the inside of the tanks (I have three fiberglass tanks) and the fuel was replaced, the problem disappeared. I did have gasket failure under both the fill and pick up plates.
5) May older type A1 fuel lines began to break down with the addition of ethanol into the gas. This caused a black power like build up in the fuel filters requiring them to be changed every 30 minutes of operation. These lines were installed in 1989 and were not alcohol resistant. I replaced all of the fuel lines with new type A1 which are alcohol resitant and no more problem. The gaskets on the pickup and fill plates failed and began to leak when underway with full tanks. New gaskets, no more problem.I hope this aswers some of your questions.
