As you guys know, I have a lot of free time still on my hands. My surgery is scheduled for April 6. Anyway, I have been getting phone calls and emails from several people either directly or indirectly concerned about the ethanol problem.
I try to keep everyone current since I know this may or may not become a problem for all of us. This morning I got an email from a friend I talk with from a forum that discusses my industry. From one of our discussions yesterday we went from talking business to talking about our boats, and that led to the link he sent me today.
I am also awaiting an email with photos of aluminum tanks that have been destroyed because of ethanol. I was also made aware of testing conducted at Brookhaven Labs, that confirms the presence of styrine and iso-pthalates, (a result of fiberglass breakdown) in the tests done by BoatUS. Some other points of interest include the fact that besides older Bertram and Hatteras glass tanks being affected , so are older Viking that have fiberglass as well. Brand new Grady Whites are being recalled because the ethanol is eating the seal around the sending units. A poster on the BoatUS forum mentioned he is losing about 1-1.5gph compared to when he used straight gas. Even the ethanol producers claim that the reason it is trucked in and mixed at the ditribution centers is because it would clog their pipelines, and that we just need to make "adjustments" in order to "cope" with the ethanol. It seems that every day I am finding out about another ethanol created problem.
Al (Lobsta1) who posts here on occasion wrote a letter to an ethanol distributer/supplier which can be seen at the link. Bill G. who posts here also sent a similar letter as well and emailed me a copy, including the reply. I also emailed a letter 3 days ago and have not yet received a reply. I plan on spending the next day or 2 printing out the posts and information I have gathered and then getting in my car and will try to work my way up the political ladder.
