I would not grind off too much gelcoat. If it is a small area its ok but you still have to body work or fair it out. Gelcoat is like a sealer for the fiberglass cloth [mat], if you sand it off you will see a lot of pinholes in your finish and have a much bigger job of bodyworking. Sounds like you have some stress cracks by your windshield. You can use a metal can opener to gouge out the crack,sand and fill with thickened epoxy, then fair. Use high build primer then paint. Ken
