Hearing about these problems in the NE, I'm concerned about corn-fuel making its way down to FL.
I have starting a letter writing campaign to my state/fed legislators. Here's my generic letter. Others might consider doing the same.
I support the President's initiative to reduce our dependence on foreign fuels and welcome the results from research towards alternative fuels for America. However, I would like to make you aware of serious problems that have resulted from the use of ethenol blended fuels in boats.
In the Northeast U.S., ethenol blended fuels have been mandated by state legilation. These blended fuels are being required by ALL distributors of gasoline including marinas. Over the past 2 years, serious problems have arisen with the use of ethenol blends in boats that have been manufactured using fiberglass fuel tanks. Research is ongoing to determine the exact causes of these problems, however the problems are manifested in engine malfunction and failure. It is suspected that the ethenol blended fuels are reacting to the fiberglass and breaking down the storage tanks. The problem resolution in many cases is complete replacement of all fuel storage and engines on boats. The costs associated with these repairs is often $50,000 or more.
With the large impact that boating has on the Florida and local economy, I am asking that serious consideration be made to restrict legislation that would require ethenol blended fuels in marine applications.
Respectfully yours,
