JC - the book says change the oil every 250 hours, but I'm like you and do it at about 125. I notice that the engines burn almost no oil up until 100 hours then burn more after that. I figure the oil is becoming diluted with diesel and gets thinner. Change the filters with each oil change and use the Fleetgaurd LF 3894 - I order mine from Tony Athens. Check his recent post on the Cummins B series forum on boatdiesel.com where he rates the various filters.
Diesel engines use a huge amount of air vs. a gas engine, and any restriction in air flow will drastically affect performance. The stock Cummins paper filters get waterlogged after about 6 months in a humid climate and are junk. Get a pair of the S&B filters from Tony and you are done for good.
