Generator for home

I have been talking to an electrician about installing a home generator for emergencies and there seems to be a lot of plusses and minuses to deciding which way to go. One way is a fully automatic self contained propane system (seemingly very expensive), the other is a manual switching box with a gas pull start generator that I drag out when needed. This will need stored gasoline which isn't so great given we (in NY) are now told our gasoline has only a 90 day shelf life.
I have oil heat, so a diesel generator might be a better way to go, but I don't know if air cooled ones are available.
Uncle Vic seems to have saved the day for his family during the Louisiana disasters and has motivated my looking into doing this. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated. Walter
