Yes, I pumped the tank dry prior to this season. Then put in some fuel and alcohol, pumped thru a filter and back into the tank for an hour or so, let sit a few days then pumped dry.
I wanted to have tank chemically cleaned but could not find a company in my area. This season fuel looks clean so I think it worked. Still I converted over to the Fram 1 micron Tar/Varnish removing filters.
And yes my problem was from last year. I made the mistake of not trusting my gut instinct telling me it was fuel and listened to mechanics telling me it couldn't be the fuel but was the heads and carburation. Rebuilt top end and new carbs only to have the same problem my very first attempt at a run. Bent rods. Ran from gerry jugs and was able to get up on plane before putting her away for the winter.
This year I was runnng, but bending rods just about every time I started her up or ran over cruising speed. However each time I was able to go a bit further and faster without a problem, now spraying cleaner down the carb before shutting down I haven't bent anything in a few weeks.
I'd like to take a real long run to clean/burn off the crude, but get tied of staying just outside the harbour running around yet don't trust engines enough to run further or with kids.
Its a catch 22
