People are definitely getting their alcohols mixed (pun intended). I suggest going right to the source (alcohol suppliers)for some clarification. Here is a good place to start:
http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/motorgas/4_oxygenated-gasoline/default.asp
You will find:
- Ethanol causes fuel leaning
- Ethanol increases the possibility of vapor lock
- Ethanol (not methanol) causes phase separation. Once the alcohol has absorbed enough water from the air or from tank contamination, fuel in the tank will separate into two very distinct layers; a top phase of almost all gas (or gas/oil if oil is pre-mixed, a bottom layer of water/alcohol. (Think about the consequences...especially with engines using manually-mixed gas/oil!)
- Water in the bottom layer of phase-separated fuel will cause corrosion
- Ethanol will swell and/or soften certain natural and synthetic elastomers
- Ethanol oxygenated gas has much greater solvency than gas alone ... will disolve many types of residues on the interior of storage tanks and fuel systems
- Ethanol can permeate non-metal fuel system componentsPlus: Some plastics are definitely dissolving in ethanol-oxygenated fuel. Topping off a tank containing MTBE-oxygenated gas with ethanol-oxygenated gas can cause formation of a "gooey" gel which has been causing additional problems in filters and fuel pumps...
